Giant Fun Features

This is the section for all our "FUN" Giant information - please enjoy!

Did You Know?

... This was James Dean's last movie. He died in a car crash before filming was completed and a few of his lines had to be dubbed by another actor.

... Both James Dean and Rock Hudson were nominated for Best Actor Academy Awards for their work in Giant although neither one of them took home the Oscar because Yul Brynner was recognized for his work in The King and I.

... Mercedes McCambridge, who played Luz Benedict received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Giant. She would later gain a certain amount of "cult" fame as the voice for the satanic demon that possesses Regan in The Exorcist.

... Giant was based on the novel of the same name by Edna Ferber.

... Giant was shot on location in Marfa, Texas. The town has become a tourist destination known for its arts and the Marfa Lights. In recent years both There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men were filmed there.

... A fan of the movie who visited the set in 1955 has some wonderful photographs. He made a return trip to Marfa and found the Hotel Paisano where the movie plays continuously and there is a Giant movie memorabilia room. He also confirms that the massive painting seen in the Benedict home in the movie now hangs in the Menger Hotel in San Antonio.

... Hollywood casting frequently gives us mothers barely older than their children. Elizabeth Taylor was actually younger than Carroll Baker who played her daughter Luz and only four years older than Dennis Hopper who played her son. The magic of movie makeup successfully aged the characters over thirty years so somehow it all worked out.

... You can read a transcript of the dialogue of the movie Giant.

... This YouTube video touched our hearts because it demonstrates how much an encounter with a star can mean. These people greatly treasure their memories of meeting James Dean fifty years ago.

... James Franco starred in a TV movie about James Dean which recreated the scene from Giant where Jett strikes oil.

"I guess you're just about the best looking gal we've seen around here in a long time."
