Tom Hanks Features

This is the section for all our "FUN" Tom Hanks information - please enjoy!

Did You Know?

... that Tom Hanks is one of those hip people with a MySpace page. You can become one of his "friends" and watch a video he made about his electric car. You can find him at www.myspace.com/tomhanks

... that Tom got his start in the world of TV during the eighties. He made guest appearances on Taxi, The Love Boat, Family Ties and Happy Days. The Happy Days episode came in the era after Ron Howard left the show - when Fonzie had traded in his black leather jacket for a suit and a tie - see for yourself in this clip of Tom Hanks v. Henry Winkler:

... that the young Tom Hanks was quickly given his own sitcom called Bosom Buddies that while popular only lasted for two seasons on the small screen as Tom saw bigger and better things in his future on the big screen. For a little treat, here's a clip that shows some classic "early Hanks":

... that Tom Hanks and Spencer Tracy hold the distinction of being the only two actors to have ever won back-to-back Oscars. Spencer won his Oscars for his roles in Captains Courageous and Boys Town ('37 & '38) and Tom for his roles in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump (pictured here) in '94 & '95.

... that Tom Hank has starred in five movies that have made over $200 million at the boxoffice: The Da Vinci Code (pictured here), Cast Away, Toy Story 2, Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump. But that's not the most astounding fact ... in total Tom Hank's movies have grossed over 4 BILLION DOLLARS. And along with Will Smith and Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks is one of only three actors to have had 7 consecutive movies gross over $100 million dollars. So what is the take away from all this ... as Tom Hanks fans we are in good company!

... that Cast Away was not the first role that Tom gained weight to play. He put on nearly 30 lbs for his role in A League of Their Own.

... that the idea for the movie In and Out germinated from Tom Hanks' Academy Award Acceptance Speech for his Philadelphia performance. Tom Hanks mentioned and thanked an acting teacher and mentioned that the teacher was gay. The movie In and Out starts with this scene (Matt Dillon is the Oscar winner) and Kevin Kline stars as the not-yet-out-of-the-closet acting teacher. Don't miss our Tribute to Kevin Kline.

... that Tom Hanks is married to actress Rita Wilson. They first met when Rita had a guest role as a girl with mighty big 80's hair on Bosom Buddies (pictured here). They grew close while filming Volunteers. They also have appeared together in That Thing You Do!, Sleepless in Seattle and Bonfire of the Vanities. Rita also appeared in an episode of Tom's mini-series From the Earth to the Moon.

... that there is more than two actors in the Hanks' family. His son, Colin Hanks (seen here in Untraceable) is also trying his hand at the family business. He's been working since 2000, most notably in Orange County and King Kong. And Tom Hank's younger son Chet Hanks also has the acting bug, most recently seen in a small walk-on role in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

... that Tom Hanks is a successful movie producer with a growing track record of creating hits from his Playtone Productions company. They made a TON of money from the sleeper hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding. They produce the HBO drama Big Love along with the miniseries Band of Brothers, John Adams and soon The Pacific. They also produced Tom Hanks' latest movie Charlie Wilson's War (pictured here.)

... if you weren't already a fan of Tom Hanks after you read this story you certainly will be. When he heard that his neighborhood book store was struggling he volunteered to do a personal appearance to help sales. Considering that one of our favorite Tom Hanks roles is the big book store chain owner pushing the little book shop out of business in You've Got Mail (picture here), there is considerable irony here. As one of the customers said, "He was warm and wonderful and unpretentious and kind." We always thought so.

... that Tom wrote, directed, produced and starred in the movie That Thing You Do!. He is one of the few actors who have assumed all four of these roles for a major motion picture.

... Tom Hanks was part of the Barack Obama Presidential Inaugural Celebration. Here he participates in the We Are One Concert:

Hollywood Walk of Fame Star
In the early 1960's, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce developed the idea of the "Hollywood Walk of Fame." The sidewalks of the most famous streets in the heart of Hollywood were lined with "stars" recognizing celebrities' life-long contributions to the entertainment industry. Receiving a star is still to this day considered a huge honor. Here's where you can find Tom Hanks' star:
