E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial Fun Features

This is the section for all our "FUN" E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial information - please enjoy!

Did You Know?

… The girl that Elliot kisses in his science class grows up to be Baywatch actress Erika Eleniak.

... Director Steven Spielberg seems to have a thing for Peter Pan. Not only is this the story that Elliot's mom reads to Gertie but he went on to make his own version of this classic children's tale ... Hook.

... Many stories about the making of E. T. can be found on the internet. But what's true and what's not?

  • Debra Winger was the voice of E. T. Not true.

Steven Spielberg asked his good friend Debra Winger to record the voice for E. T. on the rough cut of the movie. Which she did. But in the movie that you and I saw and heard the voice was a painstakingly made creation of the English spoken words voiced by a woman named Pat Welsh mixed with breathing, snorts, burps, and other sounds of 18 different contributors some of them animals.

  • E. T. was a little person in a suit. Not exactly.

Steven Spielberg was adamant that E. T. was not going to be a human being dressed in a suit. Many people labored to try and create the perfect alien creature. Finally the creative team knew that a live person would have to be used. They used the uncooperative four year daughter of a friend to make a test demonstration of the three foot tall character. Steven Spielberg was won over and a little person named Pat Bilon shared the part with Matthew de Merit a boy with no legs. A mime was hired to create the movements of E. T.'s expressive hands. There were also 12 operators who used wires to move body parts and facial expressions.

  • E. T. 's face was modeled after Albert Einstein. Again not exactly true.

Steven Spielberg was especially concerned with E. T.' s face and eyes. He showed the model makers many pictures of what he was looking for. He told them he wanted the alien to have the look of the wizened wisdom of Carl Sandberg, Ernest Hemingway and Albert Einstein. The eyes were especially hard to create until they hit upon the idea of using real glass eyes made at the Jules Stein Eye Institute.

  • The governemnt agent's guns were digitally removed in the reissue of the movie. True

Steven Spielberg said that he had one regret in the making of E. T. and that was that he had directed a scene of government agents holding guns in an effort to apprehend children. When he was interviewed in a documentary about the movie he seemed genuinely sorry about that decision and vowed to remove the guns if the movie was reissued and he did.

... You can read the screenplay for E. T. online.

... Where are they now? We think you know where Drew Barrymore is and if you don't you can check her out in our Destination Hollywood Tribute to Drew Barrymore. Yes that was Henry Thomas (pictured here) on episodes of CSI and Without a Trace. He has been in many movies but hasn't had a break out role. Upcoming he will be in the movie adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel Dear John. We have to admit it jolted us that he is described as playing the "older" man in the love triangle in the movie. Robert MacNaughton lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife and son and works for the U. S. Post Office.

... Here is the absolutely great audition by Henry Thomas for the part of Elliot in E. T.

... that some very clever person has created a "trailer" for an E.T. sequel. There are alot of these types of fake trailers out there. This is the best one we've ever seen.

... Just for fun. Since little Gertie's scream when she see the little alien for the first time is one of our all time favorite movie moments we had to share this.
