Casablanca Fun Features

This is the section for all our "FUN" Casablanca information - please enjoy!

Did You Know?

… that the script was adapted from a play called "Everybody Comes to Ricks."

… that Casablanca contains one of the most often misquoted lines of all time. Most people are surprised to find out that nobody ever says "Play it again, Sam." in Casablanca. Ilsa says "Play it Sam. Play as Time Goes By." Listen to the QuickClip.

… that Ingrid Bergman did not know until the very end of shooting who her character was really supposed to be in love with and she complained bitterly about this because of the difficulty not knowing added to her acting task.

... As you watch Casablanca you might find yourself wondering just what those "letter of transit" were. Truth is they were just a plot device, a MacGunffin, there were no such papers in World War II. There also were never any uniformed German soldiers in Casablanca. And one more question. Why can't Rick return to America? The writers never were able to come up with a reason so it will always be a mystery.

... When Julius and Philip Epstein along with Howard Koch won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay they became the only pair of twins to ever win an Oscar. We have a feeling this is a record which just might never be broken.

... Dooley Wilson who played Sam the piano player could not really play the paino.

... Casablanca is frequently cited as an example of a perfect screenplay. In 1983 as a hoax it was renamed Everybody Comes To Rick's and sent out to Hollywood production companies and agencies. Most of them turned it down. You can read about it here.

... Casablanca takes top honors for having the most "best movie quotes" in the AFI 100 best movie line list.

  • #5 Here's looking at you kid

  • #20 Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship

  • #28 Play it Sam, Play As Time Goes By

  • #32 Round up the usual suspects

  • #43 We'll always have Paris

  • #67 Of all the gin joint in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.

... If you find yourself in Casablanca, Morocco today you really can go to Rick's. An American woman has opened a replica of the famous cafe. And yes there is a piano player who plays As Time Goes By every night and it's quite a coincidence but his name is Isam.

Receiving a star is still to this day considered a huge honor. Here's where you can find the stars of Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains and director Michael Curtiz:

Capt. Louis Renault ( Claude Rains ):

"Because my dear Ricky, I suspect that underneath that cynical shell you are at heart a sentimentalist."
